Miele’s Compact Living Concept powered by Hettich blends cooking, dining and workspace functions into one flexible, space-saving unit.

Designed as both a home and creative workspace, this compact Japanese apartment has been reimagined by architect owners Saeco Kobayashi and Taishin Shiozaki of atelierco as a series of open, flexible spaces layered across one continuous volume. Once a densely compartmentalised share house, the renovation removes almost all internal walls and sections of floor, exposing the sloping terrain beneath. Organised around adaptable, multi-use spaces rather than fixed rooms, a series of split levels defines zones for working, dining, and relaxing while maintaining strong visual connections throughout. At the lowest level, sunken “pits” reveal the ground below, housing a study and cleverly integrated storage. Light moves freely across the interior, reinforcing the sense of openness despite the home’s compact footprint.
