Welcome to DESIGN SEED!
Imagine waking up to an urban farm just 15 minutes from Kuala Lumpur city, with sunlight streaming through towering wooden doors that open directly into a lush garden. This is the story of the Lapan House in Cheras, a raw yet refined home that balances practicality, climate response, and an honest connection to nature.
The home greets you with a raw concrete façade softened by greenery, where towering ficus trees create shade and a sense of calm. Inside, cleverly designed two-tier solid wooden doors, inspired by Brazilian architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha, celebrate craftsmanship while encouraging natural cross-ventilation.
A tranquil fish pond water table not only cools the home but also brings daily moments of reflection. The open-plan living and dining space blurs the line between indoors and outdoors with the use of primitive yet timeless materials: sand brick, terrazzo floors, steel, and timber.
Designed as his own home, Shin Chang shows us how simplicity, practicality, and trust in the outdoors can shape a lifestyle that is sustainable, functional, and deeply personal. If you’re passionate about modern tropical homes, Malaysian architecture, sustainable design, and creative ways to live with nature, this episode will inspire you.
