This two-bedroom apartment, designed by Crumbs Interior (https://crumbsinterior.com/) for a young couple with Peranakan roots, artfully blends cultural heritage with modern living. The couple, who enjoys hosting friends, wanted their home to reflect their personalities while incorporating subtle Peranakan touches without overwhelming the space.

To achieve this balance, the design team infused nostalgic elements into the home’s modern framework. A key feature is the slim wall divider in the foyer, crafted from Peranakan-inspired ventilation blocks, which offers privacy while maintaining a visual connection to the living area. The balcony showcases Peranakan tiles, visible from the living room, creating a standout feature without overpowering the overall aesthetic.

Dark wooden surfaces were used to create a warm, inviting feel, while careful attention was paid to keeping the space bright and airy. Wooden-framed sliding kitchen windows ensure good ventilation while maintaining openness between the kitchen and dining area.

Peranakan accent tiles on the kitchen backsplash add a playful splash of colour, while the mosaic flooring in the yard introduces character to the warm and woody kitchen. Despite its compact size, the galley-style kitchen offers ample storage and counter space.

The common bathroom features a striking dragon-painted washbasin, a nod to both the Peranakan aesthetic and the husband’s birth year. Paired with green subway tiles and warm wooden accents, the bathroom evokes a sense of nostalgia and intimacy.

The master bedroom is a peaceful retreat, with a soothing colour palette of olive green deep browns and other neutral tones, and includes a cosy library corner by the window.

This project beautifully demonstrates how blending cultural influences with contemporary design can create a unique and welcoming home that reflects the homeowners' tastes and lifestyle.
