This Home Preserves the Legacy of Chen Wen Hsi | Singapore

In this week's episode, we visit 5 Kingsmead Road, the former home of Singapore pioneer artist Chen Wen Hsi 陈文希 and the only private residence in Singapore recognised by the National Heritage Board as a historic site under both the Art and Culture & Community categories. Rather than treating the house as a blank canvas, the homeowners chose to preserve Chen's two original murals and build their new home around them, allowing art, memory and everyday life to continue side by side.

Designed by Formwerkz Architects with interiors by Studio TERRE, the home draws from Chen's belief in the harmony between people and nature. Concrete, natural light and carefully framed views create a quiet backdrop for an extensive collection of Singaporean art, allowing the house to become not only a place to live, but a living continuation of one of Singapore's most important artistic legacies.
