How A Historic Artist’s Garden Home Is Shaped by Art and Nature

Stacked Homes 10.2K 318 1 Feb 2026

Video description from @stackedhomes

In this special episode, a restored home in Singapore carries the legacy of Chen Wen Hsi (陈文希), a pioneering artist and key figure of the Nanyang style. Once where he lived, painted and taught, the home has been sensitively reimagined to honour his belief in harmony between life and nature. Garden courtyards and picture windows frame shifting views like living artworks, while concrete lends the space an unexpected sense of lightness, softened by greenery that draws the landscape inward. Two preserved murals anchor the home emotionally, alongside works by first- and second-generation Singapore artists, allowing the house to extend Chen’s lineage as a place where art remains part of everyday life.

The only private residence in Singapore designated by the National Heritage Board for its contributions to art, culture, and community, 5 Kingsmead Road stands as a living monument where legacy is carried forward through space, light, and art.
