Queen Street is one of the oldest streets in Singapore. Flats here are unique because they are located right in the city, but still retain their local character and ‘heartland charm’. Homeowner Timothy decided to purchase this 38-year-old, four-room unit for its history, and its location near amenities and the National Library, which he frequents.
In this home tour, Timothy shares how he worked with his designer from Provolk to transform the standard four-room layout of this Queen Street unit into a spacious dwelling fit for entertaining, relaxing and working from home.
Notably, one bedroom was knocked down to create a more spacious living and dining area, and with room now for a dry kitchen. The corridor recess area was also purchased and made part of the interior, thus enlarging the unit.
The home is predominantly modern, but warmly layered with a mix of natural materials and retro details. It also underscores the owner’s love of the mid-century modern movement.
Terrazzo, engineered timber, rattan, bouclé and warm metals imbue the home with a sense of comfort and tie in well with the local character of the neighbourhood with its mix of museums and shophouses set against modern buildings.
Timothy’s love for blue can be seen in the various design details around the home. Artworks including a wildlife photograph by Michael Poliza, and a specially commissioned piece done by local artists Ripple Root add vibrancy to this Queen Street dwelling.
