WELCOME to Design Seed!

What if you could design your dream home from an empty piece of land? Would you build a conventional modern bungalow, or reimagine something much more familiar? For architect Jerry Tan of YHDA, the answer was inspired by the traditional Malaysian shophouse.

This contemporary bungalow reinterprets the character of traditional shophouse architecture through a tropical lens, bringing together open-air courtyards, natural ventilation, landscaped spaces and thoughtfully designed openings to create a home that feels connected to nature.

From its minimalist facade and grand spiral staircase to its internal courtyard, naturally ventilated bathrooms and open-air corridors, every space reveals a different way of bringing light, air and greenery into everyday living.

Join Alex Lee from Design Seed as we explore this unique shophouse-inspired bungalow in Malaysia, and discover how traditional architectural ideas can be reimagined for contemporary family living.
