In this episode of Design Seed, we step inside a remarkable 1980s terrace house in Kuala Lumpur that challenges the traditional idea of renovation. Instead of extending the home or building outward, the architect reimagined the entire 2,000 sq ft footprint through spatial reconfiguration, light, and ventilation.

This is not a story about adding more space. It is about unlocking the potential of what already exists.

Designed by the design technologist, Suffian Shahabuddin from 6IX Design Office for his own family, this home explores how a terrace house renovation in Malaysia can feel open, breathable, and modern, without increasing its physical footprint. At the heart of the design is a reintroduced and expanded lightwell, transforming the once dark and compartmentalised interior into a light-filled, courtyard-like home.
