Why freehold doesn’t guarantee a safe exit:

The $100K loss was painful.

But the more important lesson was discovering that a property which felt “safe” could still be difficult to exit.

She bought before COVID expecting to live and work in the city. Then her circumstances and working habits changed.

Eventually, keeping the property no longer made sense.

Her reflection was simple:

“Freehold is just like a safe bet. I thought it was, but I guess it’s not.”

This doesn’t mean freehold property is bad.

It means tenure is only one part of the decision. A safe exit still depends on future demand, the next buyer pool and how your property compares with their other options.

Before buying, I would ask:

Who is likely to buy this from me next?

Will that demand remain if the market or my plans change?

Can I exit without being forced to hold longer than intended?

Your property may remain exactly the same.

But your life can change very quickly.

Save this before choosing your next property.
