Chicago's Home Insurance Building was completed in 1885: ten storeys, 138 feet tall (about 42 metres), with a cast iron frame that carried much of the load, so the walls could be thinner and the windows taller. It is often called one of the world's first skyscrapers. It stood from 1885 until 1931, forty-six years.
